Guide to Measuring Your Space for Carpentry Projects
To provide you with a free estimate prior to our site visit, we kindly ask that you measure the areas where you’d like the work to be done. Please follow the detailed steps below and, if possible, send us photographs of the space to accompany your measurements.
Unable to Measure or Take Photos?
We understand that not everyone may feel comfortable or able to take measurements or photographs of their space, and we’re more than happy to assist you.
If you’re unable to measure the area or take photographs, please don’t worry. Simply reach out to us, and we can arrange a site visit to take measurements ourselves to provide you with a quotation.
Our goal is to make the process as easy and inclusive as possible for everyone. Whether you can provide detailed or approximate measurements, or just a general idea of what you’re looking for, we’re here to help bring your vision to life.
Measuring for Alcove Units and Wardrobes
Alcove units and wardrobes typically fit into recesses or spaces along walls. To ensure the perfect fit, we need the following measurements:
Width: Measure the distance across the alcove or space where the unit will be placed. Take the measurement at the top, middle, and bottom to ensure accuracy (spaces aren’t always perfectly straight). Note all three measurements.
Height: Measure from the floor to the ceiling or the desired top height of the unit. Again, measure at multiple points and use the smallest measurement.
Depth: Measure from the wall to the edge of the alcove or to your preferred depth for the unit.
📸 Tip: Take photographs of the entire alcove area, including any skirting boards, sockets, or other obstructions.
Measuring for Fitted Wardrobes
When planning fitted wardrobes, it’s crucial to obtain precise dimensions to ensure they fit seamlessly into your space. Here’s what to measure:
Width: Measure the space across where the wardrobe will be installed. Check at the top, middle, and bottom, and record all three measurements.
Height: Measure from the floor to the ceiling or your desired top height. Again, check multiple points.
Depth: Decide how deep you want your wardrobe to be. A standard depth is usually around 600 mm (60 cm), but you can specify your preferred depth.
📸 Tip: Photograph the wall where the wardrobe will be installed, ensuring any nearby features (e.g., sockets, radiators) are visible.
Measuring for Flooring
To calculate the materials needed for flooring, including skirting boards or scotia, follow these steps:
Floor Area (in square metres):
Measure the length and width of the room in metres.
Multiply these two measurements together to get the total area in square metres. (Example: A room that’s 4 m long and 3 m wide is 12 m².)
Skirting Boards or Scotia:
Measure the length of each wall in the room.
Add these together to calculate the total perimeter. (Example: A room with walls measuring 4 m, 4 m, 3 m, and 3 m has a perimeter of 14 m.)
📸 Tip: Take photographs of the room from different angles to provide a comprehensive view of the area.
Measuring for Doors
When replacing doors, accurate measurements are essential to ensure a proper fit. Follow these steps:
Door Dimensions: Measure the current door’s height, width, and thickness. Note if the door size is unusual.
Door Frame (if no door is installed or if the door is an unusual size): Measure the internal frame.
Width: Measure from one side of the opening to the other, at the top, middle, and bottom. Record all three measurements.
Height: Measure from the floor to the top of the frame.
📸 Tip: Take clear photographs of the full door and its frame from multiple angles, including any details like hinge cut-outs and strike plate.
Additional Tips for Accurate Measurements
Use a metal tape measure for better results.
Double-check your measurements to ensure accuracy.
Identify any obstructions (e.g., radiators, sockets, pipes) that might affect the installation.
Send us any sketches or drawings alongside your measurements if helpful.
By following this guide and providing clear photos, you’ll help us prepare a more accurate estimate, saving time and ensuring your project is perfectly tailored to your needs.
